Millimetres to feet for sheet material

Sheet sizes are spoken in feet and cut in millimetres. The conversions people look up are almost always a sheet edge, so here they are in one table.

One foot is exactly 304.8 mm and one inch is exactly 25.4 mm. Metric sheets are made to round millimetre sizes, which is why an “8 foot” sheet is 0.06 in longer than 8 feet.
How to convert
- Millimetres to feet: divide by 304.8. 2440 ÷ 304.8 = 8.005 ft.
- Millimetres to inches: divide by 25.4. 1220 ÷ 25.4 = 48.03 in.
- Feet to millimetres: multiply by 304.8. 4 ft × 304.8 = 1219.2 mm, and the sheet is made at 1220 mm.
- Feet and inches to millimetres: convert both to inches, add them and multiply by 25.4. 6 ft 9.5 in = 81.5 in = 2070 mm.
Why not plan in feet
Rounding is the problem. 8 ft is 2438.4 mm, 1.6 mm short of the real sheet; four such errors in a row are a part that no longer fits. A saw fence, a CNC controller and a supplier’s cutting service all work in millimetres, so the cut list should be in millimetres from the start.

Kitchen and furniture parts are designed in round millimetres, so their imperial values are rarely round:

Thickness in inches
Common sheet thicknesses are also metric. 18 mm is 0.71 in, which is why an 18 mm board is not the same as a nominal 3/4 in (19.05 mm) board. If a joint, a groove or a machine file depends on thickness, measure the board you will use rather than relying on the nominal figure.
